Artifacts
(Charles P. Aimar, Sr., White House Plantation, Charleston, 1841-1915), brass fluid lamp, acid-etched "C. P. Aimar", 9 in., [handle loose, missing parts;] brass volunteer fireman's whistle, 3-1/2 in.; fire emergency brass alarm with pull key, stamped "Fire Alarm Key/To give an alarm pull the hook down once only/close the door/do not repeat the alarm", with attached key and chain; brass plaque engraved "Dr. Aimar", wood backing, 5-1/4 x 18 in.; brass bell with wooden handle, 9 in., [loss and damage handle]; brass lantern parts, [missing glass and other parts], all with wear. Notes: Charles Pons Aimar (1826–1905, Charleston, SC) was the principal of G. W. Aimar and Company, a very successful pharmaceutical firm at the corner of Vanderhorst and King Streets for many years. He was an influential and prosperous resident of Charleston.
Aimar was a member of Charleston’s volunteer Vigilant Fire Company, serving in various capacities over the years from their location at 46 State Street. Vigilant moved to number 33 State Street in 1849 and ceased operations in 1882 when the city of Charleston took over their responsibilities. Both buildings still stand..
