George III Carved Mahogany Double Chair Back Settee; c. 1770, with wide pierced latticed back splats, to scrolled arms, on square legs joined by rectangular stretchers, H.- 37 1/2 in., W.- 53 1/2 in., D.- 23 1/2 in. Provenance: Samuel T. Freeman's & Co. "Rare and Early American Furniture from the Estate of the late Ann Brown Ellis (Mrs. Thomas Ellis)," December 13, 1955, Lot 372; Exhibited: "A Man Full of Trouble" Tavern and the Paschall House, 125-127 Spruce Street, Society Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Condition
Condition consistent with age and use. Significant wear and chipping along the front edges of the front legs. Moderate wear along the outside edges of the arms. The top right corner of the left chair back has a crack through the frame which has been repaired with a nail through the front. The wooden support running under the center of the seat has been reinforced with metal brackets on either end. The upholstered seat has been replaced.
