Marie Laurencin (1883-1956)

Marie Laurencin was born in Paris in 1883. The poet and painter is known as a muse of the poet Apollinaire. Laurencin first learned the art of porcelain painting in Sèvres; then she went to Paris to study painting at the Académie Humbert. There she met Georges Braque, Picasso and Apollinaire, who led her to Cubism. In 1917, she published the Dadaist magazine "391" with Francis Picabia, Albert Gleizes and Arthur Cravan. She held her first solo exhibition in 1919 at the Gallery of Alfred Flechtheim in Düsseldorf. Many followed, such as in Paris in 1919 in collaboration with Braque, Matisse and Picasso. In the 1920s, the artist produced stage sets and book illustrations. Despite the influence of Cubism, Laurencin’s works show her own handwriting. Her works show ‘light’ and lyrical motifs and a delicate gradation of pastel-like colors. Many international renowned museum exhibit her works, such as the Tate Britain in London, the Pushkin-Museum in Moscow or the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
