Item Details
Description
Rome, ca. 100 to 300 CE. This is a pair of small blown glass jars. One is the popular "sprinkler" style with a bulbous, dimpled body; the other has two applied handles and a more squared-off cylindrical shape. Both were likely used for perfurmes or unguents; they have narrow necks to prevent evaporation of precious liquids. Glass blowing, invented in the Roman Middle East in the 1st century CE, revolutionized Roman household wares; suddenly glass, once too precious to be purchased by the average citizen, became cheaper and easier to produce. The average Roman citizen during this time period would have had small glass jars like these as part of their toilet. Size: 2" W x 3" H (5.1 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: Ex. M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL, Ex Jackson, Auctions, IA.
