Description
Roman, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A carved ceramic head depicting Silenus, the loyal companion and tutor to Dionysus/Bacchus, the god of wine. He was usually represented as older than the Satyrs of the Dionysian entourage and for that reason is oftentimes referred to as Papposilenus. In addition, his form departs from that of the satyrs in that he possessed horse-like features rather than goat-like characteristics. Here of course the artist only depicted his head with its expressive visage and wavy coif, but the piece certainly captures the effusive, inebriated state of this mythological creature. Lucite block stand. Size: 1.5" W x 1.75" H (3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
