Description
Far East, China, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A small jade carving depicting a pair of animals, probably dogs, lying prone with limbs tucked underneath their bodies. One of the "dogs" is larger than the other, perhaps indicating that the sculptor has depicted a mother and her young puppy. Finely carved from a lovely grey-green mutton fat jade with attractive brown inclusions and fine incised details. Adorable! Size: 2" L x 1.75" W (5.1 cm x 4.4 cm)
Provenance: Estate of Paul & Louise Bernheimer. Paul and Louise Bernheimer devoted their lives to collecting and dealing in antiques. Paul was scion of the family that founded the world-famous Bernheimerhaus on Lenbachplatz in Munich, Germany, in 1864. By 1900, the Bernheimers had become official purveyors to the Court of Bavaria. Their clients included members of the European aristocracy and American magnates. Louise came to antiques, and to the business, via her professional training as a costume designer. After leaving Germany in 1939, forced into exile by the Nazis, the Bernheimers re-established themselves in the States. They eventually ran antiques concerns in Boston, Cambridge, and Cape Cod. In addition to their own businesses, they frequently exhibited their rare wares in antiques shows held in various U.S. cities.
