Description
Howard Norton Cook (American, 1901-1980), "Happy Uncle (Old-Timer)"-circa 1935, wood engraving on tinted laid paper, pencil signed, inscribed, and dated lower right "Howard Cook imp. 1935", limited edition of 25 noted lower left margin in pencil. Figural print depicting an older man with shoulder length wavy hair and wrinkled face with happy and pleasant facial expression. Further inscriptions to sheet edge lower left "Happy Uncle" (possibly in the artist's hand) and lower right "81.4.4". Framed approximately 18.75" x 16.25". Sight size approximately 9.75" x 8". Provenance: From the Private Collection of Benno & Babette Rothschild, Columbus, Georgia. Note: A print of this subject from this edition is in the Spencer Museum of Art, Lawrence, Kansas collection, another is located in the collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
Condition
Examined out of the frame. Crisp, dark impression with no apparent fading. Sheet trimmed and not laid down, affixed to back mat board with two narrow pieces of hinging tape along top edge of sheet. Sheet overall with subtle rippling and very minor discolorations to margins commensurate with handling. Upper margin at left and right with two short vertical dark marks, possibly within the paper grain. Flattened crease to upper left margin. No apparent tears, losses, or abrasions.
