The importance of the works of Machiavelli to the development of Western political thought since the Renaissance is impossible to overstate. _The Prince_ is the archetypal manual for the exercise of power in the preservation of stability, but also of the need to balance _fortuna_ with _virtu_ to the greatest extent possible. While _The Prince_ is one of the clearest early calls for the unification of Italy, it has also become an essential text in numerous fields, from International Relations to Business Management. The _Discourses_ is perhaps the finest statement of republican principles to emerge from the Renaissance and shows in truer colours Machiavelli_s genuine political ideals. _The History of Florence_ and the _Art of War_ are both masterworks of their genres.......THE THREE VOLUMES ARE COMPLETE IN ALL RESPECTS INCLUDING A FINE FULL-PAGE PORTRAIT OF MACHIAVELLI AND FOLDING TABLES. The three volumes are paginated as follows: Vol. I: [16], 846; Vol. II: [28], 702; Vol. III: [8], 271, [1], 364. Each volume measures about 14.4 cm by 9.0 cm by 4.1 cm; each leaf measures about 138 mm by 83 mm........THE THREE VOLUMES ARE IN VERY GOOD TO EXCELLENT CONDITION INTERNALLY, AND IN VERY GOOD CONDITION EXTERNALLY. The leaves are generally quite clean, with clear print and ample margins throughout. The plate and the folding tables are excellent impressions. The folds of the tables are entirely intact. The leaves show minor toning at the edges, but remain perfectly supple. The three volumes are bound in full late 17th century German vellum, contemporary to the time of publication. The hinges and book-blocks are strong. The vellum shows some toning and bowing, but the bindings remain attractive. The vellum covering the lower outer corners and lower fore-edges of the boards of volume 1 is split and worn; the same is true of the vellum covering the outer edge of the rear board of volume 3. This does not in any way affect the integrity or strength of the bindings. The tail of the spine of volume 2 shows a shallow chip.
