Description
This attractive solid bronze paperweight in the form of an Arhat, Rokan in Japanese, an enlightened being. He is often portrayed with a group of 18 Rokans, and this Rokan's attribute is his lion. The Rokan wears the robe of an Indian monk with a mantle draped over his shoulders. He is seated with his lion resting by his feet. The attention to detail can be seen in the raised designs on the mantle. The lion is beautifully crafted with exquisite lines defining its fur. Its big paw showing large claws is contrasted with the Rokan's nicely defined open sandals with toes. In 1868,the Meiji Restoration marked an end of feudalism in Japan and a beginning of modernization. Modernization marked the end of the Samurai way of life and put sword makers out of work. The end of the Japanese weaponry resulted in the blossoming of works of art in bronzes. Dating after Meiji Restoration 1868 and later. Dimensions: 3.25" wide, 2" deep, 2.5" high
