Description
This vase with two confronting phoenix has a blue mottled glaze that is thick and unctuous with splatterings of black and white. The glaze is a signature of the wares of Shiwan, the pottery center of South China, located near Guangzhou (Canton.) The Shiwan potters claim ancestry from the Song Dynasty potters who fled south after the Mongol invasion. They found a home in Shiwan on the Pearl River. The area was rich in alluvial deposits, and well forested, with plentiful firewood for the kilns. With the minerals found nearby, the Shiwan potters were able to produce brilliant flambé glazes, a secret said to be inherited from their ancestors who produced the famous Jun glazes.11.6 inches high and 6 inches wide
