Description
Far East, Japan, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A striking Japanese Noryai Amida Buddha statuette carved from wood with areas of original gilding. The Buddha stands upon a multi-tiered, lotus pedestal before a large and ornately decorated mandorla, with a radiating halo surrounding his head and hands making a meaningful mudra. Given the positioning of the remaining fingers of the right hand, this mudra appears to be the Karana gesture intended to ward off evil or expel negativity. The Buddha wears a simple robe rather than elaborate body ornamentation, a sign that he has reached the point of enlightenment. The robe covers both shoulders and cascades over the body in a lovely draped pattern. Upon his head is a characteristic coiffure shaped like a rounded protuberance. The hair was once most likely divided into tight curls. This hairstyle is a sign of high rank. Also characteristic of Buddha's who are perceived to possess superhuman qualities are elongated ears, long arms, and webbed fingers. A wondrous and very old example. Size: 13" x 4-1/4" (33 cm x 10.8 cm).
