DESCRIPTION: The Essay on Friendship. By Henry D. Thoreau. Published by The Roycroft Shop, East Aurora, N.Y.: 1903. Original limp green suede with yap edges, and green moire front and back pastedowns with matching detached ribbon marker. Top-edge gilt. Gilt lettering on blind-stamped label on front cover. Textblock detached from cover, and front fly-leaf and dedication page detached from textblock. Sewing intact, but loose. Bright colorful artwork throughout. 45 pages. Hubbard was an American writer, artist and publisher, credited with founding The Arts and Crafts community, "Roycroft", in East Aurora, NY in 1895. He and his second wife, Alice Moore Hubbard, were passangers on the Lusitania and perished after a German U-Boat torpedo sunk the liner on May 7, 1915. MEASUREMENTS: 8-1/4" x 6-1/4". CONDITION: Yellowing, browning, discoloration to green suede cover. With 1/4" tear to upper right corner of front cover. Toning and discoloration throughout pages.
