Description
MAMIE DOUD EISENHOWER
(1896 - 1979) First Lady, wife of Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th President of the United States. Lot of five T.L.S.s "Mamie Doud Eisenhower" as First Lady on White House letterhead, each 1p. 8vo., Washington, Gettysburg and Georgia, 1955-56, to White House Chief Usher James B. West and other ushers. In part: "...You are always thoughtful enough to give the President and me pleasure on our 'special' days but we appreciate especially your remembering our fortieth wedding anniversary...this handsome luggage rack...the fact that the rack is made from White House wood makes it all the more to be cherished...so very pleased to receive your lovely birthday card...with the little chair attached to it...I am especially happy that the chair will be made of White House pine...delighted with the beautiful wristlet corsage of pink roses...and equally pleased with the little 'Hurry Home' card...during this anxious time [the President was recovering from surgery for an intestinal blockage]...". Fine.
