Description
Ivory coast. Baulè people. Couple of statues ornate with fabric and cords. Male statue 1884 gr. (65,9 oz.) 84x20x13 cm (33,1x17,9x5,1 inch). Female statue 1837 gr. (64,8 oz.) 81x19x12 cm (31,9x7,5x4,7 inch). Very rare. Ex Fall Elhadji collection. The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adpted masking traditions from their neighbors, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples. There are three basic types used in a special dance of rejoicing called Goli, symbolizing the social order. These masks are Kpan, with elaborate coiffures and refined carving; they represent the Senior female in the ceremonies.
