Description
This unusual ceramic portrait features an image incised into ceramic tile. As a whole, the image may be a self portrait showing the artist's interior life and imagination. The focal point of the image is a man's face in profile. At the bottom of the composition, within the face, is a figure standing with its back to the viewer. To the right is a man standing with his hand held out and to the left is a beach scene with a ship, clouds and birds on the horizon. This is indeed a complex image yet retains Peter Max's sense of artistic joy.
28.5 x 33.5 in
Peter Max (born 1937) is, along with Andy Warhol, Roy Liechtenstein and Robert Indiana, one of the most renowned artists working in the Pop Art style. He fled Germany with his family in 1938, spending time in Shanghai, China and Haifa, Israel before emigrating to New York. His work has enjoyed significant commercial and popular appeal, working on projects for 7-Up, the United States Postal Service and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He lives in New York with his wife and continues to produce new work.
