Oaxacan Rawhide and Bark Hoop / Frame Drum
Item Details
Description
Latin America, Mexico, Oaxaca, ca. 1925 CE. A finely crafted hoop style hand drum, comprised of rawhide stretched over both side faces, tree bark bent around the periphery, all components fastened together with cord, with a loop for suspension. The instrument, when held vertically for drumming, is large enough to produce a nice sound but not so large as to be difficult or awkward to use. The indigenous cultures of Mesoamerica have incorporated rhythms and harmonies in ceremonial rituals, dances, theatrical events, and even warfare since the Pre-Columbian era. Sculptural homages to musicians and dancers provide ample evidence of this. A lovely percussive instrument! Size: 12" in diameter x 2-3/4" (30.5 x 7 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA
