Item Details
Description
Ancient Greece, Western Asia, ca. 2nd century BCE. A breathtakingly beautiful brown and white agate cabochon stone with a flat face and remarkably smooth surfaces, set in a hand-crafted sheet gold setting with a heavy rope border, a large suspension loop at the top. The Greek philosopher Theophrastus discovered agate along the shore of Achates (hence the name) in modern day Sicily between the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE. This pendant would make an elegant necklace. An exceptional specimen! Custom, museum-quality mount. Size: 1-1/4" x 1-1/4"

Provenance: Ex-Anavian family collection acquired over 30 years ago by David and Henry Anavian in Iran, prior to the Shahs.
