Provenance: Provenance: acquired from the artist by the present owner Mrs. Frances Barnes, Pittsburgh Pa.; Frances Barnes was a student at Shaw Jr. High School between 1931 and 1934.Shaw Jr. High School was the school where Alma Thomas taught. Alma Thomas was Frances Barnes art teacher, and also her homeroom teacher. The two of them often ate lunch together in the classroom alone. Mrs. Barnes became the principal marionette actor for many of the marionette plays that Ms. Thomas incorporated into her classes after studying with master marionette maker Tony Sarg in New York City. Mrs. Barnes became a close friend of Alma Thomas, who she referred to as her "Aunt" Alma. They remained close friends until Ms. Thomas' death in 1978. She would visit Ms. Thomas' house, which became a second home. She spent hours watching Alma Thomas paint in her kitchen and living room.
