. A group of three undated archaistic brass astrolabe discs with incised quadrants and arcs, numeric notation. 78 grams total, 89mm each (3 1/2"). From a Buckinghamshire collection, UK; acquired in the 1990s. The astrolabe was first invented in the Hellenistic period by Apollonius of Perga in about 220 BC and was used in calculating problems in astronomical science. In the Islamic world it was used to calculate the direction of Mecca and the time for prayer. [No Reserve]
