PROVENANCE: By descent from the consignor’s great-grandfather. W.J. Dickey & Sons, Inc. was a weaving mill started by William J. Dickey in 1887 after he purchased the Union Manufacturing mill complex at auction. He originally named it Oella Mills and it produced such items as wool jerseys, plaid linseys and cotton duck. After Dickey's death in 1896, the name was changed to W.J. Dickey & Sons, Inc and was run by his son William A. Dickey, Jr (a prominent citizen of Baltimore, serving on the board Baltimore City Park Board and Liberty Mutual Insurance Company and helping develop Patapsco State Park). A fire destroyed much of the complex in 1918 but the company rebuilt, survived the Depression and during WWII manufactured blue Melton fabric for Navy dress uniforms. The badges were worn by company guards during WWII. The consignor was the fifth generation to run the business until its close in 1972 due to the increasing popularity of foreign and polyester double knit fabrics. MEASUREMENTS: See Description. CONDITION: All with minor patina. Eaton-Clark with dark patina.
