Early Moche Grayware Bottle of Hunter with a Fawn
c. 200 - 400 AD
c. 200 - 400 AD
The molded bottle depicts a stern faced hunter wearing a short head wrapping with ties under the chin, a tunic with tied belt across the waist, and carries a small fawn in his arms. The young deer appears to be alive with a wide open eye, and the man holds the front legs tight together to prevent movement. The deer may serve as a sacrifice to gods. The man exhibits diagonal scarification lines on the face and his widened eyes may indicate a trance-like state during ritual practice.
