Note: The ''eloquent tribute'' mentioned in the inscription is in reference to Senator George C. Perkins's speech memorializing General Edward Fitzgerald Beale (Truxton Beale's father) at the Smithsonian Institute's dedication ceremony for New York artist Isidore Konti's (1862-1938) bronze plaque honoring the heroic efforts of General Beale and Kit Carson during the Mexican-American War. At the Battle of San Pascal, the two men volunteered to crawl through the Mexican lines under cover of night and fetch reinforcements from the fleet at San Diego, thereby emerging as heroes.
