Item Details
Description
An Egyptian terracotta figure of a Sothic dog, Roman Period, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD, standing to right, head facing with tail curled over its hind quarters, wearing a collar with a circular pendant, a bulla. H: 2 7/8 in (7.3 cm); L: 3 in (7.6 cm). A very nice example with earthen deposits throughout and with a custom wood base. The Sothic dog of Isis was connected with the dog star Sirius, the heliacal rising of which marked the first day of the year and the coming of the yearly flooding of the Nile (the inundation). Figures of the Sothic dog were popular during the 1st and 2nd Century AD and valued for the domestic shrines as a harbinger of the New Year and to protect the household from the chaos caused by the rising waters. Ex Philadelphia private collection.
