Description
AN AFRICAN CARVED WOOD SEATED FEMALE FIGURE, POSSIBLY LUBA/SHANKADI PEOPLE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO, FIRST HALF 20TH CENTURY, carved in a seated position with short hairstyle above almond shaped eyes and short flattened nose, over an oval raised mouth and pointed chin, on a short neck with squared shoulders flanking small conical breasts above sides with crosshatched scarification and tubular arms ending in hands holding a protruding stomach over scarification details, reversing to a backside with vertical raised bar scarifications above large separated buttocks, the underside enclosing a printed Segy Gallery label, mounted on a custom rectangular wood base. NOTE: It has been suggested that this figure might be from the Sambia, Kaonde region and was a type once used during initiation ceremonies, called "mbudye," and representing one of the many Luba royalty titles. Each title is represented by a sculpture so that the new initiate can recognize the "mbudye" structure. This figure is probably one of the four "African sculptures" purchased at Segy Gallery of New York City, February 21, 1952, and referred to in a letter by Ladislas Segy from March 17, 1952. Height: 11 1/2"
