first edition, first issue with wade on p.21, signed presentation inscription "from the Author" to Edith Margaret Argles on half-title, frontispiece and illustrations by John Tenniel, 1 p. advertisements, occasional light spotting or foxing to margins, spotting to endpapers and half-title, original cloth, light repair and restoration to joints and spine ends, corners a little bumped, covers a little rubbed and darkened, preserved in custom morocco-backed drop-back box, [Crutch 84], 8vo, 1872 . Edith Margaret Argles (1853-1935) a long-time child-friend of the author's who eventually became Vice-Principal of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. This copy is one of the 100 copies the author inscribed in December of 1871.
