Description
William Glackens (American, 1870 - 1938). "Long Island, Summer". Oil on canvas. c1916. Signed "W.G. by E.G." on stretcher bar, verso. The Artist's wife, Edith Glackens, signed many of his works after his death. Very good condition with no repairs, not relined, on original stretcher. Our example is similar in style and subject (the trees) to the Artist's "Beach Umbrellas at Blue Point," "Home in New Hampshire," "Carl Schurz Park, New York," "Bowlers, La Ciotat," "Bathing in Conway," and "Baie St. Paul, Quebec, No.4," to name a few, all in the collection of the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. William Glackens was one of the most influential American painters in the first decades of the twentieth century. From his beginnings as a witty magazine artist-illustrator to his participation in the forward-thinking group of artists dubbed "The Eight," Glackens was a perceptive intrepreter of his surroundings. One of the most versatile and popular artists of his time, Glackens assimilated the lighthearted modern French themes of spirited cafes and bustling parks and resorts in such canvases as "Chez Mouquin" (1905) and "Sledding, Central Park" (1912). An admirer of the more traditional figure painting of Renoir, his name also became closely linked to the modern artists who exhibited their works at the famous Armory Show of 1913, which he helped organize. Image size: 24 x 30 in. (610 x 762 mm). [23571] |8000| {R100} (TL15) tuzzz~tozzz
