Eames Leg Splint. C. 1942 Charles Eames (American 1907-1978) Ray Eames (American 1912-1988). Manufactured by Evans Products, Molded Plywood Division. One is in The Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, a gift of Fifty/50,1984. During W.W. II, the U. S. Navy called upon the Eames Bros. to create a lightweight inexpensive leg splint. The resulting design is a highly sculptural yet functional device. Access to military technology allowed the Eameses to perfect their technique for molding plywood. In its three dimensional biomorphic form, the leg splint suggests the Eames subsequent highly influential plywood furniture designs. This information provided by The Metropolitan Museum of Art description of its 1984 acquisition. This splint was Lot #299 Phillips Sale No. 790 and retains its auction tag. 40"L
