Item Details
Description
George John Aho (1911-1994, Rapid City, MI). Rare Long Swimming Walleye.
George carved this walleye’s tail with an active right turning motion;its mouth is open; and the famous “wall eyes” are mother of pearl
buttons. Excellent condition. Hand signed and dated. 18” long. Est. $700-1,000. Ship: $45
George’s ancestors had been ice fishing for hundreds of years, but spear fishing with a decoy is essentially unknown there because it is an American invention. George was singularly adept and well known for his spear fish decoys. His painting is superb. Provenance: The Linda and Gene Kangas Collection. Illustrated in “George Aho: Carver of Spear Fishing Decoys” by Gene Kangas, Hunting & Fishing Collectibles
Magazine, Nov./Dec. 2006, p. 21-23 and Hooked On Wood The Allure Of The Fish Decoy, Exhibition and Catalog sponsored by The
Center for art in Wood, Philadelphia, 2012.
