Musical Automaton Picture Clock of an Italian Village by Xavier Tharin, c. 1870
Paris, hand-colored lithograph depicting a harbor scene with abbey, fountain, viaduct and watchtower on a hill, with two-train clock movement (No. 108) striking hours and halves on gong, 2 1/4-inch (5.5 cm) enameled Roman dial, key-wind four-air cylinder movement (No. 617) with 68 teeth in comb (complete), tune-sheet listing two dance airs and two operatic airs by Verdi and Meyerbeer, operating instructions and going-barrel automaton movement, in giltwood and gesso frame, 27 x 36 in. (69 x 92 cm) unframed, 32 x 41 in. (82 x 104 cm) framed, good original working condition, edges of picture taped. The movement activates: nodding friar reading in a tower room, musician nodding his head as he strums a lute, twisting glass rod in the fountain, lady mending net by the harbor wall, a rocking ship in the foreground and two more on the horizon, a locomotive passing over the viaduct and the flag on the watchtower fluttering in the wind. – A beautiful exhibition piece in good working order. – Reference: Auction Team Breker, 25 May 2013, Lot 430 for a similar piece.

Handkolorierte Lithographie mit Darstellung eines Hafens am Mittelmeer, mit Abtei, Brunnen, Viadukt und Wachturm auf einem Hügel. 2-zügiges Uhrwerk, Halbstundenschlag auf Tonfeder, emailliertes Zifferblatt mit römischen Ziffern (Ø 5,5 cm), Walzenspielwerk mit 4 Melodien, Nr. 617, 2 Tanzstücke und 2 Opernmelodien von Verdi und Meyerbeer, 68 Töne im Stahlkamm (komplett), Federwerkmotor für Bewegungen (Kurbelaufzug): Ein Mönch liest nickend am offenen Turm-Fenster, ein Musiker bewegt seinen Kopf, während er die Laute schlägt, und wippt mit dem Fuß im Takt der Musik, im Brunnen dreht sich eine Glassäule, um das Wasser zu simulieren, die Fischersfrau an der Hafenmauer repariert ein Netz, ein Schiff schaukelt im Hafenbecken und zwei weitere am Horizont, eine Eisenbahn fährt über den Viadukt und die Fahne auf dem Turm flattert im Wind. In aufwendig verziertem und vergoldetem Rahmen, Maße 104 x 82 cm gerahmt, 92 x 69 ungerahmt, innen mit gedruckter Bedienungsanleitung und Original-Melodienblatt, Ränder des Bildes mit Klebeband fixiert. – Ein exzellentes Ausstellungsstück in gut funktionierendem Zustand.
