Unusual Hidden Drum and Piccolo Musical Box by Ducommun-Girod, c. 1860
No. 21656/953, playing a "Scottish Potpourri", a quadrille and four operatic airs by Verdi and Rossini (Gamme No. 7000) accompanied by optional drum, with 94 teeth in musical comb and 8 teeth in percussion comb (both complete), flat-topped winding lever stamped "Ducommun Girod", tune-sheet, rosewood-veneered case with brass stringing, colored enamel inlay, wd. 19 in. (48 cm), cylinder 10 ½ in. (17 cm), one corner of brass stringing lifting, one tooth replaced, movement in good restored playing condition. Arthur Ord-Hume suggests that musical boxes with hidden bells came into vogue around 1845. – Literature: Ord-Hume, "The Musical Box, a Guide for Collectors", p. 90. – This hidden drum musical box with carillon effect (thanks to piccolo pinning on the last eight treble teeth) but no bells is an unusual variant of the form.

Die Mechanik befindet sich in gut restauriertem und spielendem Zustand. – Nach Arthur Ord-Hume kamen Spieldosen mit versteckten Trommeln um 1845 in Mode. – Literatur: Ord-Hume, "The Musical Box, a Guide for Collectors", S. 90. – Diese Walzenspieldose mit Glockenklang ohne Glocken (erreicht durch die Piccolo-Bestiftung der oberen 8 Töne) ist eine ungewöhnliche Variante dieser Bauform.
