Jimmy Wong
Although Jimmy Wong has been tattooing for over thirty years, he began his journey as an artist drawing erotica. During the Vietnam War, Wong saw the tattooed arms of U.S. service men stationed in North Thailand. It was then he knew at he wanted to pursue this special art. In 1971 he apprenticed himself to a Chinese master tattooist from Hong Kong to learn his craft. When his master returned home, Jimmy took over the business. His customers were mainly U.S. military working on an airbase on the Thai/Laos border. The early work was of the American Traditional style. Eventually Jimmy became well versed in Thai, Japanese, and Chinese tattoo styles. When the war ended and the soldiers returned home to the States, Jimmy moved his business to Bangkok, Thailand, where the art of tattooing was more socially-acceptable. He worked on-call and was hired by tourists through local hotel concierges. Eventually with the growth of his business and reputation, he opened his own shop, Jimmy Wong Tattoo Studio, located in Bangkok Palace Hotel.
