Description
Charles H. White (American (Philadelphia) c. 1855. Rosewood and red leather, stamp on top inside of proper right leg "C. W. and Co.", probably for Charles H. White. A pair of heavily carved rosewood tub or library chairs, the u-shaped crest and arms upholstered in red leather with hammered brass nailhead trim, terminating in dog's head masqueron hand rests, the central carved back with heavily carved classical opposing dolphin motifs with intertwined tails and carved acanthus leaf scrolls, over the round seat upholstered in conforming leather upholstery, the curved arm supports terminating in curved acanthus leaves over honeycomb knee blocks, the curved seat rail and sides with chip carved motifs, on acanthus carved cabriole front legs terminating in lion's paw front feet and cabriole back legs on scroll feet, front feet on casters. Approximate height 35.5", width 25", depth 21.5", seat to floor 19.5".
