Item Details
Description
Chinese, Qing Dynasty, (1644-1911). Fine carved circular shaped scholar's inkstone, probably carved from Duan stone, the thick and heavy slab carved with smooth sunken palette emptying into a cloud shaped ink-pool, flanked to the back by carved smiling recumbent foo dogs or shishi's, both appearing to be scratching their heads with hind leg and centered with embroidered ball representing supremacy over the world. Apparently not marked. Approximate height 4.8", diameter 9.5".
Note: According to the late Ming literatus Wen Zhenheng (1585-1645): 'inkstones from Duan brook quarries are superior'. Inkstones made from the Duan brook quarries, located in present day Guangdong province, were considered the best because of the various distinctive markings and rock materials imbedded in the stone.
Condition
Overall in excellent condition. Right fu dog with small chip to right nostril and small chip to third knuckle on left foot. Scratches to underside commensurate with age. Ink well with adhesive residue at center.
