Description
William Pettie (Continental School, 19th century). "Blowing Bubbles"-1868, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right. Charming genre painting depicting a mother and son seated in a rustic interior beside a glass paned window with mountains in view beyond, the boy at center left leaning toward mother and blowing bubbles as she peers toward a bubble aloft in the room and holds a bowl full of bubbles in her lap, the scene with scattered homegoods to the floor and surrounding tables. Period paper label to verso of stretcher citing traditional subject of artist and medals won. Framed approximately 42.25" x 37.5", unframed approximately 29.75" x 25".
