Item Details
Description
South Asia, Nepal, ca. 17th century CE. A hand carved stone stele depicting the Hindu god Vishnu, standing upon a half lotus platform, facing outward with a classic, serene expression on his visage. Vishnu proudly holds his traditional attributes (mace, chakra, conch, and lotus) in each of his four hands. Each attribute connotes meaningful iconographic symbolism. The sound that the conch shell produces 'Om' symbolizes the primeval sound of creation; the discus or chakra represents the mind; the lotus is a beautiful flower that signifies existence and liberation, and the mace symbolizes mental and physical strength. Vishnu also wears the traditional Nepalese crown and a large garland around his neck that trails all the way down to his knees. The figure is backed by an aureole trimmed with carved foliate motifs. Vishnu rides on Garuda, the King of Birds, who is represented as an eagle with outspread wings in the center of the lotus pedestal. The inherent beauty and patina of the aged stone is undeniable, and further enhanced by red blessing Tika powder remains on the low lying areas of the carving. An elegant and important piece, rich in symbolic iconography and displaying fine technique. Attached to a black museum mounted base. Size: 9" x 5-1/2" x 2-1/4" (22.9 x 14 x 5.7 cm); 10-1/2" high with stand.

Vishnu is the second god of the Hindu triumvirate. The triumvirate is comprised of Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu who are responsible for the creation, maintenance, and destruction of the universe. Brahma is the creator; Shiva is the destroyer, and Vishnu who is associated with light and the sun in Hindu Vedas is the preserver and protector of the universe.
