Suite of Four Georgian Sterling Silver Candlesticks, hallmarked Sheffield, 1778-1781, by John Winter & Co., in the neoclassical taste, each with a pedestal-form standard of tapering square section, surmounted by an urn-form nozzle with circular bobeche and raised above a shaped square base, decorated with embossed urns, swags and patera and beaded banding, engraved on the standard and two bobeches with a crest of a lion's gamb, h. 12", w. 5-1/8", weighted.

Overall Condition: Good. Scattered nicks and scuffs consistent with age, but no breaks, splits, repairs or significant dents noted. One nozzle slightly out or true (on right in image). Loss of detail to the highest points of relief from two centuries of polishing. One baize pad on the underside lacking, two others soiled and peeling off, the other new and in good condition. Pitch filling in good shape; no rattle or losses. Bobeches fixed, possibly not meant to be detatchble. Each candlestick hallmarked (on the basal edge) with: 1) the sterling lion passant; 2) the Sheffield crown; 3) the Sheffield date letter "S" for 1778-1779 (one with "G" for 1782-1783); and 4) the "I.W. & Co." maker's mark of John Winter & Co. Marks worn but fully legible on all.
