Description
Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "F. STETZENMEYER. / ROCHESTER. N.Y.", circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and tall rim molding, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a flowering plant bearing a three-petaled flower with spotted center, flanked by a bud and leaves. Heavily-striped detail to flower blossom, bud, and leaves. Slip-trailed "2" to shoulder. Light cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A desirable Stetzenmeyer motif. A few small chips to one handle. A small chip to opposite handle. Some minor staining. A thin 7" diagonal spider crack on front, which extends through top flower petal. Some wear to cobalt. A tiny stone ping to front. A minuscule nick to rim on front of rim. A very faint 2 3/4" surface line to underside, not visible on interior.
