Stereoscopy is the technique for enhancing the illusion of depth in an image and development of the original viewmaster in 1938 intended to make use of stereoscopy in photography and postcard viewing. It was sold mainly in photography shops, stationary stores, and scenic-attraction gift shops. The main subjects of View-Master reels were the Grand Canyon and the Carlsbad Caverns.

In the 1940's, the U.S. military commissioned specialty reels for personnel training. In total, the U.S. military bought 100,000 viewmasters and six million reels over the course of 3 years. The reels were intended to aid in artillery spotting and aircraft identification. While the concept is a simple one, it is the basis for the future of virtual reality technology. The stereoscope is essentially an instrument in which two photographs of the same object, taken from slightly different angles, are simultaneously presented, one to each eye. This is the same technology employed by the Oculus Rift and grandmas love the Oculus Rift.Featured Video:

Excellent: Used, but barely. Excellent is a small step under Mint, but Excellent can have very minor signs of wear. The wear must be a normal, desirable part of aging or so minor that it’s barely noticeable and visible only upon close inspection. Damage of any sort is not “very minor.” Wear or minor, normal factory flaws should be noted. (Factory flaws are small blemishes common at the time of manufacture — a tiny air bubble under paint, for example.)
Equivalent CGC grade 8.5 to 9.4

Very Good: A well-cared-for item that has seen limited use but remains in great condition. Item and instructions are complete and undamaged but may show some signs of wear.
Equivalent CGC grade 7.0 to 8.4

Good: Item shows wear from consistent use, but it remains in good condition. The original instructions are included and in acceptable condition. The item may be marked, identified, or show other signs of previous use. The item works perfectly and is in good shape overall.
Equivalent CGC grade 6.0 to 6.9

Fair: Items have considerable wear: scratches, worn paint, chips or decals missing. Parts may be missing. Original packaging has considerable damage as well.
Equivalent CGC grade below 6.0
