Note: Paul Coze emmigrated from France to the United States in the 1930s, lived briefly in Pasadena in the 1940s where he taught at the Art Institute and worked in the art department at 20th Century Fox, and settled in Phoenix by the 1950s. Coze married Katharine 'Kay' Coze, niece of artists Anna Katharine Skeele and Frode Dann. He maintained an active art studio in Phoenix where he produced many significant civic murals around the city, scores of which have been lost to renovation and construction. Of particular interest to the artist was the local Native American culture. In the present work, Coze incorporates Native American and art elements together to create a Surrealist, off-kilter and thoroughly unique self portrait. Other examples of the artist's work included in the sale continue similar themes of surrealist/modern depictions of self and Native American culture. Two black and white photographs of the painting from the artist's estate are included with the lot.
