Alexander Calder (American, 1898-1976) A Pair of Shutters. Acrylic paint on Sears plastic window shutters. One shutter is signed and dated twice "Calder 73" Each shutter: 35" x 16". Provenance: The consignor of the lot received the shutters as a gift from Alexander Calder, who was acquainted with the consignor's father through his work with Sears Roebuck in the 1960's - 1970's. Left: lower left corner sustains an area of paint loss, approx 1" x 1". The lower right corner sustains paint loss approximately 2" x 2". The lower edge of the shutter sustains a continuous line of scuffing from left to right sides. The middle right side of the shutter sustains an area of paint loss approximately 2.5" in length, which is exposing the shutter underneath. There is an area of vertical scratching to the shutter above and below this area of loss. The line above is approximately 4" in length, and below is approximately 3" in length. Right shutter: The lower edge of the shutter sustains a continuous line of scattered scuffing / scratching from one side of the shutter to the other. The lower left corner sustain paint loss by way of scratching measuring approximately 1" x 1". A red line of discoloration is sustains within the yellow portion in lower left corner. The lower right corner is scratched approximately 1.5" x 1.5". The right side of the shutter sustains a red line within yellow that measures approximately 2". The shutter sustains paint loss above the signature at the top, and additional paint loss within the date of "73". The left side of the shutter where it meets the other shutter sustains a line of scratching / discoloration which measures approximately 14" in length. The line is not entirely continuous, but is present through the various color patterns along the left side. *In all cases, prospective buyers are responsible for determining the physical condition of lots, as there are no returns based on condition.
