Description
Very Rare Shimamura Sei Porcelain Berry Set, Incredible fine detailing and color. 1 Large Bowl and 6 Berry Bowls. Presented to our clients family in Japan c. 1950s. Clearly hallmarked with the Shimamura Mark and as it is unmarked per McKinley Tariff Act 1891, there are only two possibilities. The first is that this was potted in the middle Meiji period (1868-1913) prior to 1890, or as I suspect, this special set was never intended for export, ergo the unbelievable sculpted rims, and the spectacular, copiously gilded bands & hand painted floral medallions, MEANT FOR THE HOME MARKET ONLY! The compelling evidence to date this master set comes in the form of the Cobalt use, as well as the gilt lattice + the transfer gilded accents to the center well. These attributes were not seen until the industrial revolution period definitely dating the set to ca. 1895-1905.The Japanese mark reads down as 'Shimamura Sei' - 'Made by Shimamura'. 5.75x5.75x2. Big Bowl. 10x10x3. 5 pds
