Description
Ecuador, Jamacoaque, ca. 500 BCE - 1531 CE. This is a realistic human mask with holes for threading it with string and openings at the eyes and mouth. Interestingly, the marks on the mask's face may be taken as evidence for tattooing, branding, or some other kind of symbolic body modification. The Jama-Coaque lived in a region of modern-day Ecuador that included rainforest and beaches. Masks played an important ceremonial role, and even the Jama-Coaque small figures of people have often been carved with masks as accessories. Size: 5-1/2" tall, 5" wide at widest point, and 2-1/4" deep.
