Description

Europe, France, ca. 19th c. CE. A plaster model of the human medulla oblongata and brain stem, hand painted in hues of white, beige, and pink. The maker is unknown, possibly Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux (1797-1880) or E. Deyrolle (1838-1917). An outstanding, natural representation that was probaby created in concert with a scientific institution and finished by a skilled craftsman. Such anatomical models were created for medical students and became popular, because actual human cadavers deteriorated quickly. Size: measures 7-1/2" including stand, model itself measures 4".

Provenance: Ex-Historia Antiques, James Caswell, Santa Monica, CA.
