Description
This circa 1875 hand-made and machine sewn wool flag (52 x 80 inches) has a red wool field with crest of standing white stag with ribbon under feet, also in wool, tubular linen hoist with original jute or hemp rope and turned wood toggle with inked details on ribbon and eye of stag. This flag is beautifully made with the red field cut away and the white wool of the stag sewn into the resulting poenings. In 1817 Capt. James Robinson purchased the Brig Blessing founding the Stag Line in North Shields, England. After his death in 1833 the company passed to his wife and then son, Joseph in 1844. By 1879 the company had switched to all steamers from sail and owned 11 steamers. By 1914 the company owned 12 ships and lost 7 of them during WWI. Several ships were purchased or built between the wars and by 1939 they had 7, 4 of which were again lost during WWII. The company rebuilt after the war and is still in operation today.
