But also has entries from 1851 earlier. The first part covers the three voyages from N.Y.C. to Jaemel, Santo Domingo in the Caribbean and the return trips. These inked manuscript logs give the weather, winds and sea conditions for each day in the morning, afternoon and evening and mention ‘Hurricane force winds’ on one occasion. Report that on several occasions during high seas that all hands were needed to man the pumps to keep the ship afloat. The second part where Young was Captain/Master of the schooner Petrel gives more details of the type of cargo taken on in Santo Domingo which included ‘loog wood’ (likely the type of fine mahogany from that island), coffee and coco. It is not clear what was carried as cargo to the island from N.Y. There are 103 manuscript pages in this log book. There are records of a schooner named Tremont, built in Maine in 1847. There was a schooner by the name Petrel built in 1840 at Newburyport, Mass.
