Three 1946 Atomic Bomb Test Photos
Three 1946 Atomic Bomb Test Photos
Item Details
Description
All showing the same underwater test in the Pacific with an automatic camera on Bikini Atoll showing a large number of American, German & Japanese warships surrounding and in the mushroom cloud from the explosion. Photo was taken one minute after the explosion and some of the ships visible in the photos include Japanese Battleship Nagato, U.S. Cruiser Salt Lake City, while the U.S. Battleship Arkansas was at the center of the explosion. This test was known as Operation Crossroads and was the first test since the bombing of Nagasaki. A fleet of 95 target ships was assembled in Bikini Lagoon and hit with two detonations of Fat Man plutonium implosion-type nuclear weapons of the kind dropped on Nagasaki, each with a yield of 23 kilotons of TNT. This was the photo of the second test called Baker, which detonated 90 feet underwater on July 25, 1946. The target fleet included 4 obsolete U.S. battleships, 2 aircraft carriers, 2 cruisers, 11 destroyers, 8 submarines and numerous auxiliary and amphibious vessels, as well as 3 surrendered German & Japanese ships. One U.S. Government published photogravure is 11.5 x v19 inches and the others are 8.5 x 11 inches, and date to shortly after the tests. Each has printed text below photo, similar but not the same by size. The smaller reads as follows: ‘Official photo of underwater atom bomb blast. View taken by automatic camera located on Bikini atoll shows the mushroom-like cloud and water formation spreading over the target fleet one minute after the explosion. Center of cone is at position of the battleship Arkansas, sunk by the blast. In the left foreground is the Cruiser Salt Lake City, in the right foreground is the Japanese Battleship Nagato. Joint Army-Navy Task force One Photo’.
