Item Details
Description
South America, Spanish Colonial period, ca. 1750. Handcarved wood and polychrome cherubic figure depicting a rosy-cheeked, blue-eyed angel that very much reflects the stylings of the Baroque to Rococco periods with its sensuous fleshy form that gestures and seems to be in constant dance-like motion as if it were an angel emerging from a Peter Paul Rubens masterpiece. The piece shows intense emotion and absolutely no restraint, representing the artistic production of an era that was all about drama! Even the green and gold draperies seem to swirl around the angel's body as its wings flutter. A beautifully carved and hand-gessoed sculpture! Size: 23"H x 17"W.
