Description
Montauban, France, 1861-1929. Bronze bust of Theophania "Fanny" Princess Bunard Sevastos (mother of the consignor), which was a study for the head of Bourdelle's monumental sculpture "La France." The bronze cast has entwined monogram "AB," and is signed and dated, below "Mauviet Bourdelle (?)." Lower base reads, "La Pointe de Deg(illegible)/Ant. Bourdelle/1923." Beneath bun, "Antoine Bourdelle Sculpteur." Foundery mark reading, "Alexis Rudier/Foundeur Paris." Bronze with gold-bronze patina. 19" x 13" x 18". Bourdelle was a student of, and later assistant to, Auguste Rodin, and was noted for his commission work including monuments and war memorials. Among his more famous bronzes are those of Beethoven and Gustave Eiffel, Hercules the Archer in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Musee d'Orsay. Bourdelle was a participant in the 1913 New York Armory Show, and a founder of the Tuileries Salon in Paris.
