United States, Southwest region, ca. 1925. A pair of Western American spurs comprised of iron, copper, and German silver. Western spurs were usually rather ornate and whimsical. This pair does not disappoint in this respect. Decorated with alluringly dressed and posed female figures with flowing, long locks and sexy boots. The shanks assume the form of gaucho and boot dressed legs and resolve in a spiked rowel. Oftentimes the rowels were fitted somewhat loosely so that they would jingle and jangle, producing a loud sonorous effect, one that rivaled the 'loudness' of their aesthetic. Such examples were known as pajados and reveal the influence of Mexican jewelers. Spurs have been created by many cultures in many lands, worn by Celtic, Roman, Arabic, English . . . horsemen of many lands. But of course the legendary cowboys of the American Southwest of the late 19th century captured the popular imagination most of all. Size: 7"L x 3-3/4"W or 6" when all components extended
