Description
Meissen tureen-form reticulated dresser box after J.J. Kaendler (1706-1775), a rare reticulated double-body porcelain box, the lid surmounted with putti supporting a crown flanked by armorial cartouches and plaques decorated with rural scenes, the underside of lid decorated with a low relief floral bouquet within a heavy gilt frame; the footed tureen with female busts to either end, the sides with putti draping blanc de chine garland swags interspersed by hand-painted landscape reserves, all over gilt trim. Marked with blue underglaze crossed swords, incised, "B-136", stamped, "5I". LITERATURE: R. Rontgen, "The Book of Meissen" 2nd Ed. p. 125, 1850's. Meissen advertisement broadside, features line drawing of box. NOTES: A very similar box was commissioned for Queen Marie Leszczynska (1703-1768), daughter of the deposed King of Poland, Stanislaw Leszczynska, she was later married by proxy to France's Louis XV (1710-1774). Several versions of Kaendler's box were commissioned during the 18th century. 7.5"H x 7.5"W x 9.5"L, Circa - 1855.
